What Gives Them The Right?

So I had to go to the store today for some French Bread to make Garlic Bread out of for dinner and also for the ingredients to make Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies for my ladies that I visit teach. Anyhoo--we were driving along and there was a bus pulled over at a bus stop. He was letting some passengers off the bus and some on the bus. When I got to the middle of the bus, he decides it is time to get back on the road and just pulls out. And when I say that he just pulled out I mean he didn't start in the shoulder and then try to ease in--HE JUST PULLED RIGHT OUT INTO THE LANE--oh yeah--and it is only a 2 lane road. Now this doesn't just affect me--it also affects the car ahead of me and the one behind me. He pulled out and it forced the 3 of us into the middle of the road (luckily there was no one in the middle trying to turn into the various streets and businesses along that road). My 2 daughters are screaming their heads off and crying that the bus is trying to kill us. I am swearing under my breath and trying not to freak out in front of the girls.

Now--these are my questions. Do bus drivers have special rights and permits to NOT follow the rules of the road? Do they just get to come and go as they please not caring if they hurt someone or cause accidents on their way? Just wondering because I am pretty pissed about the whole thing!! Oh yeah--and this is NOT the first time this has happened to me--thus the reasoning for the rant.

I know! I've been noticing this now that I've been up in Salt Lake! It's so irritating, and I wish bus drivers would die. (slash learn the rules of the road)
Apparently there's a law that says, bus drivers ALWAYS have the right of way. How did I miss that one on the test?

Glad you're OK!

Did you happen to get the bus number or something to report him?

I always try to stear clear of anything bigger than my little car because I agree with you on buses and large trucks. They don't seem to follow the rules of the road and I also think they conspire between each other on their walkie talkies to do us wrong! YEAH!

Julie-
I agree 100%!!

Kristina-
Oh I got the bus number and called UTA and left a NASTY as all get out message as I wasn't able to speak to a real person as there was none available at the time of my call.

Liz-
SO ture!! I think that they do conspire on their walkie talkies!! 10-4--niner, niner!!

I know this wasn't your intent when writing this, but this post really makes me want to be a bus driver.

Oh I HATE that, I have had them pull out right in front of me where I have had to SLAM on my brakes. It makes me mad because the driver had to have seen you there. I really hate buses for that reason.

jack@$$es all of 'em. didn't you know there's a special qualification that says no rules nor courtesies apply to anybody except for you?

Jillene said...

Kristen-
I have had that happen too!! It is really great when you are traveling at 40 mph with 3 kiddos (or 5 in your case) in the car and having to SLAM on the brakes practically throwing the kids throught the windshield--but not-- because of their carseats/seatbelts but instead giving them whiplash!!

Mary-
Is it because you want to run people off the road? Or because you want to listen to people's crazy stiries about their crazy lives? Or because you are SO tiny that you would look ridiculously funny driving a big ole' bus?!

Lisa-
My sentiments EXACTLY!!

I've had this happen to me, more than once. I guess they just assume since they are bigger than you (in my case, a teeny tiny Honda Civic) they can do what they want and you will back off because they know who would get hurt in that situation. Sucks, doesn't it? I'm glad you are okay.

I am so proud of you for calling. I love it when people follow through on stuff like this- but I too, have noticed they seem to pull out without any warning.

Gives a whole new meaning to the back of the bus poster that says "This bus took out 5 commuter cars"

I'm glad there was no harm (physical) done.

I swear though, EVERY UTA bus I have ever passed has done the same thing. They are famous for it. I once knew, okay I still know someone that used to drive for UTA and she told me that they teach you to be that aggressive or you won't make it back into traffic otherwise and your route will be running late. I still think its a load of crap.

Ramona-
Thanks!! I ALWAYS follow through--that's how I roll!!

Danielle-
I am glad that no harm was done either!! There were a lot of horns honking and I am sure a lot of swearing but I am REALLY glad taht all 3 of us were paying attention!!

They REALLY teach them that? What a bunch of bastages!!

Rude! Good thing I was at school.

If UTA would have answered the phone they would have told you that it's your responsibility as a driver to NOTICE these busses and always give them the right a way. I've called before. And if an accident would have occurred, it would have been your fault. It's like a school bus, your not suppose to pass them. Yea, stupid huh?

My children ride the bus to school and we have had some bad experiences but b/c I'm so lazy to take them to school or b/c I don't care for the traffic at the school I just let them ride on the awful bus.

Good that you reported it!

I can't believe that!!! Actually I can...because it's happened many times to me too...What's the deal???

I really don't think they have free reign on roads. It's good you called and were mean! Will you please post the contents of your rant? :) hehe, I would love to hear a piece of your mind! (oh, PLEASE not directed at me...)

And I'm upset at the bus, too!! I would have done the same thing. But I think I would have called over and over and over and over.

Your poor kids, Bus drivers only THINK they have special rights, but unless you are a school bus, and they have the stop sign out, they have to follow the same LAWS as any other driver.

He was a stupid Deikini (from Willow) and a dumbkopff (stupid head in German)!!

I do think bus drivers are especially horrible in Utah. I don't know why. I remember being frustrated quite a few times.

zachsmom said...

I have had this happen to me so many times (because I drive to the city every day), I have learned that these bus drivers will go when THEY want to, it does not matter that there are other cars on the road. So, when I see a bus, I always slow down because they will never follow the same rules that we do. I am so glad that ya'll are all ok.

That stinks, I think I would clai it as their fault. They don't have stop signs like a school bus;) so why do you have to stop?
that stinks.. I have had that happen before too.

Stupid UTA!!!! They just think they rule the universe like Postal workers and DMV employees!

I had the exact same thing happen today. I think they figure they are big enough they can just run us all over and no one will notice.
