When Did Kids Get Such Expensive Taste?

My kids have decided what they want for Christmas. This year is going to be an expensive one!! Z has asked for a Star Wars Clone Wars AT-TE with 7 action figures. Cost: $90.00

He also wants the Star Wars movies on DVD. We have all 6 but they are on VHS. Cost: $60.00.

He has asked for some other things like comic books and a Ben 10 alien maker thing. All total for him--$230.00. Plus he could use some more long sleeved shirts for winter.

H wants a Barbie house with an elevator. Cost: $90.00.

O wants a baby doll. But not just any baby doll. She want the one that she calls "Poopin' in the Potty". Cost: $50.00.

The girls also both want some Barbies and Bratz dolls. Cost: $10.00-$20.00 each.

And some Barbie clothes (these are hard to find now days). Cost: $5.00 an outfit. Yes--each outfit is $5.00. And they both need some more long sleeve shirts and at least 1 more dress for winter.

When did kids start having such expensive tastes? What happened to Mr. Potato Head, Chutes and Ladders, Hot Wheels and Strawberry Shortcake?

I think the answer to your question is always. I always wanted the really cool, expensive things.

I hope Zac doesn't see the Darth Vader mask on my blog!!

Jillene said...

Thank goodness he already has a Darth Vader voice changer mask!!

My kids christmas lists look pretty close to your kids. My 12 year old loves Star Wars, and my daughter would love the "poopin in the potty" doll. LOL. My almost 17 year old stepson just wants the cold hard cash!

I read the comment you left on my blog about peanut butter play dough...gotta a recipe for that? Maybe I could find one online. Sounds yummy! I accidently ate a little of what I made..way to salty. LOL.

I don't know about your kids, but since my kids are related to me, the expensive taste just comes hard-wired in them. I mean, if you gave me a menu full of yummy things with no prices on it, somehow I would just "know" which one was the most expensive! Same for any other kind of shopping!

One of my best friends from high school hated to go to the mall with me because I was the one asking her to go and she was the one who ended up spending money while I walked away with nothing! I have that effect on people... :)

You are really quick! Thanks for the recipe!

I never seemed to get what I wanted for Christmas, except for the year I asked for a black leather jacket. (11th grade) You must be a nice mom to consider all of their wants.

My mom has a $100 limit on each kid. She always went over 30-50 bucks on each kid (5 kids in my family). I asked for expensive presents, but very rarely ever got them. I got a lot of small cheaper things so it looked like I got tons of stuff. hahaha.

And I thought you were giving Jaren a shoutout - Mr. Potato Head... lol

Yikes--I cannot afford children!!
Maybe you could make them a potato mound?! Loved your comment!! I would have "forgotten it" as well.

Tonya-
No problem!! I hope that you try it and love it as much as we do!!

Erin-
Really?! That makes me sad!!

Whitney-
I have to put a limit on my kids too. I ususally spend aroung $150.00 on each one but I always feel bad for Z because he only ends up with 2 things!!

Kelly-
HAHAHAHA!! I laughed so hard at that!! Sorry the comment was so long!

Julie-
You are so funny!! It is really expensive to have kids--I won't lie but they are TOTALLY worth every penny!!

Sadly, I think we as parents have done it to ourselves. Sometimes, we don't do moderation very well, or we give in too easily. Consequently, our children think that they can have anything and everything that they want.

my kids made thier list yestrday.... kinda funny how expensive the things they NEED... lol

but it does get harder when they get to be 12 too, it's stuff that comes smaller but even more of a price tag. Merry CHRISTmas!! LOL

we rarely watch tv in our house. They don't see very many commercials. But, my 8 and 10 year old have both asked for an IPOD, the one that you can watch a movie on, so no $50 shuffle. It's over $100, my 10year old has asked for the Dell laptop. They do not want toys. At 6 they stopped asking for Toys. My 8 year old would say she wanted a doll and then would say, no I don't want that. It will only break or I won't play with it 6 months from now.

I learned from my 2 older kids, who we doted on and threw so much away that the younger ones are really wise with their spending and their money. They are so good about that!

i always had expensive taste as a child (still do, i guess). however, we didn't always get what we "wanted". but it was an amazing surprise when we did. ;)

My mom didn't have a dollar amount limit, she just made sure we had the same number of gifts to open. So as I got older and asked for more expensive stuff, I just started getting one big ticket item and lots of little stuff from Claire's or wherever.

My kids did their lists last night. They know things are mighty tight this year, and to expect less than they're used to. So what does my oldest have on her list? Laptop, video camera, cell phone, among others. I laughed at her. I think she knew she was out of her league. I think.

Christa-
I have let my kids know that I have to pay Santa for thier presents. I told them that he doesn't give them out for free. Which is a good thing because now that Z understands the concept of money he gets it but the girls...not so much!!

Stacey-
I know right!? My son's want list is about as pricey as mine!!

MG-
I was really surprised that my son wanted toys. He hasn't asked for any for like 3 years. He is just really into Star Wars the Clone Wars--thanks in part to his father--so that is what he is wanting this year.

Sally & Rychelle-
I have expensive taste too. I am sure they get it from me.

Mina-

My son has been asking for a cell phone for 3 years now. He's 9!! I keep telling him no freaking way but it still doesn't deter him from asking!!

Why is it that Barbie clothes are so hard to find? Drives me nuts.

Black Friday...I hope you can find some of your stuff! :)

*MARY* said...

I'm just going to wrap my kids leftover halloween candy.

Annette Anthony said...

I hope what is on my girls lists are a black Friday Item TOOOOO!

My mom would say I had a Champagne taste on a beer income! Such is my life today!

We are wierd and have spilled the beans to our kids about Santa. Which has made it real nice as far as letting them know we can't afford a toy!
{The burly man did not like fibbing to the kids about their being a santa. He felt like they would have a hard time believing that we were telling them the truth about Christ and God if we had been telling them santa was true too.}

I turned out OKAY! Well maybe thats a bad example.

Jillene said...

Lara-
I KNOW!! It drives me crazy!!

Mary-
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Annette-
REALLY!? I could NEVER do that!! I want my kids to beleive for as long as possible!! I have still, never to this day, ever told my parents that I don't beleive. I was raised with the saying, "If you don't beleive, you don't receive". I will be heart broken if my kids ever stop beleiving!!

When I was little I LOVED barbies. My mom bought me a barbie cruise ship with a built in smoothie maker. A real smoothie maker, too.
As for the potty doll, I had one that would pee into a diaper. It lost it's magic after the second time.
I'm glad kids still like barbies. :)

My son is asking for an electric guitar with and amp....the others want keyboards, drums, football gear and DS games. Things do NOT get cheaper as they get older!

When I was 13 all I wanted was the latest Duran Duran record.

Mary said...

Now, what is sad is, I bough the LEGOs AT-TE, for my Husband!!! Also, the AT-AT that is motorized. Hey, he could want worse things.

When I was little I always got bras & underwear in my stocking, candy from my siblings, and clothes that didn't fit from my mom...those were the days!

Kids have always wanted the cool toys, just now the cool toys are really expensive. People are willing to pay for these big ticket items so they keep coming up with more of them.
This year we told our kids that they can choose one item and it couldn't be over a certain $ amount.
Just wait until they are teenagers and want stuff like iPods, Playstations and laptop computers.

OH..I am saying I AGREE..AMEN!! I just had a talk with my kids about some of the things they wanted...it's crazy!

My kids want expensive stuff too. I am honestly shocked at some of the goofy stuff that they are marketing and at such high prices. Of course all the commercials make the kids feel like they NEED this junk. Ugh. My middle son wants a Thomas train set that costs $250.00 and our budget was to stay under $100. I got really lucky and was able to by a Brand new set for $66 on ebay. Otherwise he would have been a very disappointed little boy.

Oh, give me a couple days and I will post my crockpot rice pudding recipe for you, ok? Sorry I couldnt get it done today.

My parents use to take away stuff that we left lying around the house and then they gave it back to us for Christmas! JK - but they often threatened us with that!

We are having a VERY simple Christmas this year :0) It is going to be an experiment in simplicity. I'll let you know how it goes.

We have saying in my house. It goes, "Santa ain't rich."

My oldest keeps pointing things out to me at the store that we need to put on the list for Santa. Our babies always get a box of diapers (they cost as much as 5 small toys) and we spend as little as possible until they realize what is going on. My girls are getting a very simple Christmas this year. I do believe there will be a lot of homemade things. My husband made the good point of not giving them a ton too soon because then, when they are older and things cost more, it won't feel like a rip off when they don't get as much. I remember that happening to me. I shouldn't talk, however. I was an only child.

My girls love the dollar store (and the dollar item bin at Target). That stuff lasts about a day, but they could care less. I guess I lucked out.

It's that DANG Toy R Us Wish Catalog I tell ya! Please I asked for a Barbie Dream House but did I ever GET it? Nope. Or the EZ Bake Oven??!! NOPE!
Circle things in the Sunday ads that seem reasonable and SHOW them to your kids and if you get some "oooh"'s or I want THAT, then you have some CHEAPER ideas!! LOL!

Heidi said...

I don't know if kid's tastes are more expensive as much as the stores are marketing expensive gifts. I don't think they even had $200 gifts out there for us. My daughter wants a walking horse that's $260! Seriously! When I said something about the price, she quickly circled it in the toy book & wrote "Santa" on it. Ug.

Vanessa said...

I hear ya. My son is killing me w/his list.

Poopin' in the potty doll! You have got to be kidding me. Like we as mom's need any more poop in our lives.

Welcome Heidi!! Thanks for checking out my blog!! I love new blog friends!!

Lee-
A smoothie maker?! SWEET!!

Ramona-
That is what my son asked for last year!!

Mary-
I think that my husband would ask for them if he was brave enough!!

Jill-
Teenagers--I CAN wait!!

Denise-
Nice snag on ebay!!

Teresa-
We are having a simple one too. I am going to sit down with the kids and we are going to set a limit!

Torina-
We told them that we have to pay Santa for all of the toys. My son gets the money thing but the girls don't.

SS-
We love the $1.00 bins at Target too. A lot of their stocking stuffers come from there!!

Wendy-
SO true!! Not only did we have a Toys R Us one, we had a Target and a Walmart one too!!

Heidi-
I have seen that horse!! It is crazy and creepy to me!!

Bonnie-
I really doens't poop or pee but it pretends. I talks and sings and brushes it's teeth too. I keep trying to talk her into something else to no avail!!

I get that responce from everyone! I love it! It makes me laugh! My children are screwed up anyways having the BURLY man as a dad!
My relief society president said to me that we were ruining the spirit of SANTA! I thought to myself what about the spirit of the true meaning of CHRISTmas.
Not a rip on you I know you teach your children the true meaning of Christmas.
I just thought it was IRONIC the way she said it.

Everything is super expensive these days….I bought a box of diapers from Costco last week for Bailey and about died $47, poor Bailey is getting diapers for Christmas.
I tell my kids they only get three gifts for Christmas (ok I don’t include clothes with that just toys) because the baby Jesus only got three gifts. I’m lucky right now they have been asking for everything they see so the way I see it I get to pick and choose what they get….I know evil mom.

kids have the coolest toys these days. I almost want to have kids so I can play with their toys... is that bad?

Jillene said...

Annette-
I don't think it's bad--it's just not the way I want to do it. I TOTALLY respect your way of doing things and I understand the reasoning behind it!!

Rachel-
Not EVEN evil mom!! My kids do the same thing!! They have just actually narrowed it down this year. I basically chose H and O's Christmas presents last year!!

Erin-
NOPE!! Not at all!!

Krissy said...

HOLY MOLY Jillene!!! LOL What IS the deal with not being able to find Barbie clothes anymore!?!? I was JUST thinking about this and told my husband about it tonight at Walmart! I want to get Natalie a Barbie for Christmas, cause she really likes them now and I can't find them ANYWHERE! I must go on a hunt! lol And I TOTALLY had a Barbie house with an elevator when I was growing up. Actually.. it was my sister's ... but we shared. lol Until my dang cousin fell on it and broke it. Skank. lol

Krissy said...

The clothes I mean. Not Barbies... But it IS hard to find Barbies that aren't skanky and barely clothed!!! LOL

My two nieces wanted Build a Bear so I got a discounted $50 card at Costco then was sent a 10$ off coupon in the mail if you spend $50 so I figure I'll end up spending $30 for two bears and outfits. Not to shabby to make their wildest dreams come true. :)

My friend and I were recently talking about the ubiquitousness of technology in our daily lives. Reading this post makes me think back to that discussion we had, and just how inseparable from electronics we have all become.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as the price of memory falls, the possibility of uploading our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's one of the things I really wish I could experience in my lifetime.
